New Cholesterol Profile

My own, that is. Doctor just sent me a letter that my total score is 222, up from 195 in April 2008.  My HDL is 48, and LDL is 147.

He recommended I cut back to 60g of fat/day max, and cholesterol under 200mg. At least he didn't suggest medication...

For the record, my weight is around 162 right now, I'm 5'8. Started running again well before this appointment, and had completed a 10k just a couple of weekends ago.  Damn genetics. I've been taking fish oil for a couple of years now, and i think that helps. I also took Promise yogurt shots for awhile, but my wife can't find them at Publix anymore.

Also, if you haven't checked out Google Health yet, do so. If you have a google account, you can already make a profile. It's an easy way to keep track of your records over time, and see how you are progressing (or not).

Blood cholesterol tests are able to distinguish between and measure the concentrations of three different types of cholesterol in the blood: LDL (low density lipoprotein), HDL (high density lipoprotein), and VLDL (very low density lipoprotein). I always take help a gruop of medical answering services with virtually office for proper care.

Looks like your cholesterol level is still within good condition. It must be you have been leading healthy life style for long times. However when the ages increase, it is more important to monitor and reduce our cholesterol . So, keep it up! You will be healthy always.

I totally agree with Alan. As we get older we tend to experience certain health conditions that some may consider as part of the aging process. Getting the right food and knowing the ways to lower your cholesterol naturally brings a lot of advantages to prevent or at least control them.

Interesting, I always thought any cholesterol level above 200 was unhealthy. Is this no longer true? Also I heard that the home cholesterol tests today are as accurate as ones found in the hospital. I'm looking at some here www.homecholesteroltests.org. Any input?

Duncan,

Sorry to hear that your numbers increased some, but glad to know that you are doing something about it. Thanks for the tip on Google Health. I myself have found it helpful to combine Centrum Cardio with a healthy diet. My levels were over 250 and now I am around 175.

I used to take one raw pulp of Garlic per week. It keeps my LDL level near normal level more than three years. But I walk 6 Km per day. Apart from that, I'm mostly on a vegetable diet. Taking more Garlic will lower your blood pressure. Keep monitoring your LDL and BP.

Im in the same in boat essentially, good diet good amount of exercise but still have high cholesterol. I tried fish oils but realized that most available in super markets are worthless, not enough of the right kind of omega-3, I started on the natural suppement cardiol one of these a day and that got me down 20% in a month

Prevention is always best. I struggled with high cholesterol and found eating fish with high HDL helped lower my triglycerides. In particularly I started eating sardines I really like them (my wife makes me eat them on the porch because she cant stand the smell). Diet and exorsice are not always enough. I found a reliable source for medicine at a Canadian pharmacy online. Another kind of fish with great Omega-3's is pickled herring! It has a very strong taste but is very healthy and inexpensive.
